About Leighton Hospital
Leighton Hospital is the main acute hospital for Mid Cheshire, located on Middlewich Road in Crewe and operated by Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. It is the only Emergency Department for the area, serving Crewe, Nantwich, Sandbach, Middlewich, Winsford and the surrounding villages, and providing 24/7 consultant-led emergency care alongside acute medicine and surgery, critical care, maternity, paediatric assessment, cardiology, cancer diagnostics and a full diagnostic imaging service. The hospital is one of seven priority sites in the New Hospital Programme because around 60% of the 1972 building uses reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC); the trust has invested over £113 million in remediation since 2020 to keep the existing site safe while a planning application for a brand new Leighton Hospital — submitted in December 2025 — progresses towards a target opening of 2032. Current Leighton Hospital A&E waiting times are tracked here in real time, sourced from the NHS England feed and Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Emergency Department (A&E)
The Emergency Department at Leighton Hospital in Crewe is the only A&E run by Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. It serves around 330,000 people across south Cheshire and the surrounding area. The ED runs two streams — “Majors” for serious or life-threatening conditions (chest pain, suspected stroke, heavy bleeding, severe breathing difficulty, major injury, or loss of consciousness) and a “Minors” / Minor Injuries stream for adults with non-life-threatening urgent problems (sprains, suspected fractures, minor head injuries, cuts, infections). Children under 16 are assessed on-site and may be transferred to a regional paediatric centre as appropriate. For non-life-threatening urgent problems, contact NHS 111 first. In a true emergency, call 999.

How Leighton Hospital compares to nearby hospitals
Within North West, Leighton Hospital is one of several urgent and emergency care sites and sits inside the wider NHS England performance framework. National waiting-time data is published by NHS England against the current NHS England operational standard of admitting, transferring or discharging 78% of A&E attendances within four hours; live snapshots on this page are sourced separately from the trust's own published feeds, so the figures here can be more current than the headline national release.
For Crewe residents, the practical question is rarely "is Leighton Hospital fast?" but "compared to what?" Wait times at any single site can swing materially within a day, depending on staffing, ambulance arrivals and how full the wider hospital is. The nearest-alternatives section above lists the closest comparable sites, each with their own current wait — that side-by-side comparison is more useful than any single-site average.
For non-life-threatening issues, residents in Crewe and surrounding North West may also have access to a Minor Injuries Unit or Urgent Treatment Centre with shorter waits for less serious conditions. NHS 111 can confirm the appropriate service for your specific need before you travel.
