About A&E in Kent

Kent is one of the most populous counties in England, with urgent and emergency care delivered across a network of acute A&E departments and GP- and nurse-led Urgent Treatment Centres (UTCs). The county's hospitals serve more than 1.8 million people from the Thames Gateway to the south Kent coast, and live UTC waiting times across the county are published by NHS Kent and Medway.

Quietest hours: Kent UTCs are typically quietest soon after they open in the morning and again in the early afternoon, with the longest waits late morning and after work; weekends and bank holidays run busier as GP surgeries close.

What to know about A&E in Kent

  • Urgent Treatment Centres (UTCs) such as the Dover UTC at Buckland Hospital handle urgent but non life-threatening problems — sprains, suspected fractures, minor head injuries, cuts and minor burns — and are usually much faster than a full A&E.
  • UTCs are not open 24 hours and do not treat emergencies. For chest pain, suspected stroke, severe bleeding or breathing difficulty, call 999 or go to a 24-hour A&E such as William Harvey Hospital in Ashford or the QEQM in Margate.
  • Kent's coastal towns see seasonal summer pressure from visitors — wait times can be higher on warm bank-holiday weekends.
  • Call NHS 111 first if you are unsure which service you need — they can advise you and often book you a UTC time slot.
