About Midland Metropolitan University Hospital
Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (Midland Met) is a 736-bed flagship acute hospital on Grove Lane in Smethwick, opened on 6 October 2024 and operated by Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust. It replaced the Emergency Departments at Sandwell General Hospital (closed 6 October 2024) and City Hospital, Birmingham (closed 10 November 2024), and is now the single A&E for around 530,000 people across Sandwell and west Birmingham. The site has a purpose-built 24/7 adult A&E with a separate dedicated children's A&E, plus a Same Day Emergency Care unit, a Critical Care Unit, eleven operating theatres, maternity and neonatal services, an emergency gynaecology assessment unit, and specialist stroke, cardiology, orthopaedic and respiratory wards — half of all inpatient beds are in single en-suite rooms. Current Midland Met A&E waiting times are tracked here in real time, sourced from the NHS England feed and Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust.
Emergency Department (A&E)
The Emergency Department at the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH) opened in October 2024 and replaced the A&E services at Sandwell General Hospital and City Hospital. It serves around 530,000 people across west Birmingham and Sandwell. The ED runs three streams: “Majors” for serious or life-threatening adult cases (chest pain, suspected stroke, heavy bleeding, severe breathing difficulty, major injury), “Minors” for adults with non-life-threatening urgent problems (sprains, suspected fractures, minor head injuries, cuts, infections), and a separate Children’s Emergency Department for under-16s. For non-life-threatening urgent problems, contact NHS 111 first. In a true emergency, call 999.

How Midland Metropolitan University Hospital compares to nearby hospitals
Within Midlands, Midland Metropolitan University Hospital is one of several urgent and emergency care sites and sits inside the wider NHS England performance framework. National waiting-time data is published by NHS England against the current NHS England operational standard of admitting, transferring or discharging 78% of A&E attendances within four hours; live snapshots on this page are sourced separately from the trust's own published feeds, so the figures here can be more current than the headline national release.
For Smethwick residents, the practical question is rarely "is Midland Metropolitan University Hospital fast?" but "compared to what?" Wait times at any single site can swing materially within a day, depending on staffing, ambulance arrivals and how full the wider hospital is. The nearest-alternatives section above lists the closest comparable sites, each with their own current wait — that side-by-side comparison is more useful than any single-site average.
For non-life-threatening issues, residents in Smethwick and surrounding Midlands may also have access to a Minor Injuries Unit or Urgent Treatment Centre with shorter waits for less serious conditions. NHS 111 can confirm the appropriate service for your specific need before you travel.
