About Westmorland General Hospital

Westmorland General Hospital is a community hospital on Burton Road in Kendal, Cumbria, operated by University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMB). It is the trust's elective and urgent (non-emergency) site, alongside the Royal Lancaster Infirmary and Furness General Hospital which provide the trust's 24/7 Emergency Departments. The on-site Urgent Treatment Centre is open 8am-11pm every day of the year, with on-site X-ray 9am-8pm and on-call cover overnight, and treats minor illnesses and injuries including sprains, suspected simple fractures, cuts, minor burns and skin problems. Westmorland also hosts the Helme Chase midwife-led maternity unit (24/7 for uncomplicated pregnancies), elective surgery, day-case surgery, outpatient clinics and diagnostic imaging. Important: this is NOT an A&E — for chest pain, stroke, severe breathing difficulty or major trauma always call 999 or attend the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (~22 miles) or Furness General Hospital (~35 miles). Current Westmorland General UTC waiting times are tracked here in real time, sourced from the NHS England feed and UHMB.

Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC)

An Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) is for urgent but non life-threatening illnesses and injuries that need same-day care - sprains, suspected broken bones, minor head injuries, infections and feverish illness. UTCs do NOT treat life-threatening emergencies (chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, suspected stroke, mental health crisis). For those, call 999 or attend the A&E at RLI Lancaster or FGH Barrow. How Westmorland General Hospital compares to nearby hospitals

Within North West, Westmorland General Hospital is one of several urgent and emergency care sites and sits inside the wider NHS England performance framework. National waiting-time data is published by NHS England against the current NHS England operational standard of admitting, transferring or discharging 78% of A&E attendances within four hours; live snapshots on this page are sourced separately from the trust's own published feeds, so the figures here can be more current than the headline national release.

For Kendal residents, the practical question is rarely "is Westmorland General Hospital fast?" but "compared to what?" Wait times at any single site can swing materially within a day, depending on staffing, ambulance arrivals and how full the wider hospital is. The nearest-alternatives section above lists the closest comparable sites, each with their own current wait — that side-by-side comparison is more useful than any single-site average.

For non-life-threatening issues, residents in Kendal and surrounding North West may also have access to a Minor Injuries Unit or Urgent Treatment Centre with shorter waits for less serious conditions. NHS 111 can confirm the appropriate service for your specific need before you travel.
