About Royal Gwent Hospital MIU

The Royal Gwent Hospital is on Cardiff Road in Newport, south Wales, operated by Aneurin Bevan University Health Board as an Enhanced Local General Hospital. There is no A&E here — the original Emergency Department closed in November 2020 when all consultant-led emergency and major-trauma care for Gwent was centralised at the Grange University Hospital in Cwmbran. The on-site Minor Injury Unit is nurse-led, run by Emergency Nurse Practitioners and open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (including bank holidays). It treats adults and children aged 1 and over with broken limbs, sprains, wounds, small burns, bites, minor eye and head injuries (no loss of consciousness), with suturing, plastering, tetanus cover and on-site X-ray. The hospital also has extensive outpatient clinics, day surgery and diagnostic imaging. Children under 1 must be taken directly to the Grange University Hospital. For chest pain, stroke, severe bleeding or major trauma always call 999 or attend the Grange University Hospital A&E in Cwmbran (~9 miles north). Current Royal Gwent MIU waiting times are tracked here in real time, sourced from the NHS Wales feed and Aneurin Bevan UHB.

How Royal Gwent Hospital MIU compares to nearby hospitals

Within Wales, Royal Gwent Hospital Minor Injuries Unit is one of several urgent and emergency care sites and sits inside the wider NHS Wales performance framework. National waiting-time data is published by StatsWales against the Welsh Government's standard that 95% of A&E attendances should be admitted, transferred or discharged within four hours; live snapshots on this page are sourced separately from the trust's own published feeds, so the figures here can be more current than the headline national release.

For Newport residents, the practical question is rarely "is Royal Gwent Hospital MIU fast?" but "compared to what?" Wait times at any single site can swing materially within a day, depending on staffing, ambulance arrivals and how full the wider hospital is. The nearest-alternatives section above lists the closest comparable sites, each with their own current wait — that side-by-side comparison is more useful than any single-site average.

For non-life-threatening issues, residents in Newport and surrounding Wales may also have access to a Minor Injuries Unit or Urgent Treatment Centre with shorter waits for less serious conditions. NHS 111 Wales can confirm the appropriate service for your specific need before you travel.
